TVRI broadcasted for the first time with a live show of the ASIAN Games IV opening ceremony at Gelora Bung Karno stadium. Today, TVRI has 27 regional stations and one central station supported by 376 transmission units which spread all across Indonesia. One of them is South Sumatra TVRI station located in Palembang.

Since its founding on 24th of August 1962, TVRI has changed status from Television Directorate under the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Indonesia in 1974, the Company Division (Corporate Governance) in 2000 and PT (Persero, Limited Company) in 2002 in accordance with Law No. 32 of 2002 and coincided with its 44th anniversary (August 24,2006), TVRI officially became Public Broadcasting Institution. Through this PT (Persero) status, the Government expect the TVRI Directors to make improvements in the field of Management, Organizational Structure, Human Resources and Finance. With the enactment of the Law of the Republic of Indonesia No. 22 of 2001 on November 23, 2001 relating to Oil and Gas, Law No. 8 of 1971 relating to the State Oil and Gas Mining Company was declared void.
