Indosat

PT Indosat Tbk was established in 1967 as a foreign investment company to provide international telecommunications services in Indonesia, commencing its operations in 1969. In 1980, the Government of Indonesia acquired all of the shares of Indosat, which then became a State-Owned Enterprise (SOE, BUMN-red). At the end of 2002, the Government of Indonesia undertook a 41,94% divesment of its share in Indosat to Singapore Technologies Telemedia Pte.Ltd. and in June 2008, Qatar Telecom (QTel) bought all Indosat shares through the holding company of Indonesia Communications Limited from Singapore Technologies Telemedia Pte. Ltd.

Indosat is the second largest mobile operator with 16,7 million subcribers base by the end 2006. The company provides its subscribers with the choice between two GSM prepaid cards – MENTARI and IM3, or the post-paid MATRIX service, or CDMA-based service card – STARONE, as well as a variety of value-added, with 26,9% GSM services market share and 3,7% for CDMA service.

Indosat launched its 3,5G for the Jakarta and Surabaya regions in November 2006. Indosat 3,5G in the intermediate generation of the 3G technology, which enables subcribers to enjoy better quality voice, video or high speed data access up to 3,6 Mbps or around 9 times faster than standard 3G service. All Indosat node B has utilized the HDSPA (High Speed Downlink Data Access) technology. Indosat is the first 3G operator, which fully adopt the HDSPA technology base in Indonesia.
